Kate Winslet finds delight in 'Carnage'

When Roman calls, Kate goes to work. Holidays can wait.

That's Roman, as in Polanski, and, Kate as in Winslet, whose new film "Carnage," a satirical comedy of manners that skewers overbearing parents, opens on Friday, one day after earning Winslet a Golden Globe nomination for acting.

"I had planned not to work," Winslet told Reuters in a telephone interview. "But that notion just went right out the window the second I heard the name Roman Polanski.

"One doesn't think of oneself as being ever sort of Roman Polanski-worthy," said Winslet about the director of such classics as "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby." "So you'd have to be kind of stupid, really, not to change your plans."

"Carnage," which also co-stars Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz, is based on Yasmina Reza's biting Broadway satire of two sets of parents who meet one afternoon to discuss their sons' playground fracas.

Set smack in the middle of smug self-righteousness that is one of the hallmarks of upscale Brooklyn neighborhoods, the film chronicles in real time the couples' downward spiral as polite overtures give way to Scotch-and-cobbler-fueled invective -- a sort of "Virginia Woolf lite."

"What's so brilliant is that Yasmina was able to make this scenario funny, because if it wasn't funny, it really wouldn't be a very pleasant film to watch," Winslet said.

"She lets us laugh with them, and at them, but more importantly, at them," she said of the four characters -- a liberal writer (Foster), her plumbing fixtures salesman husband (Reilly), a shady lawyer (Waltz) and an investment broker (Winslet) -- who are all in virtually every scene.

Winslet, who won an Oscar for "The Reader" after six nominations, laughed heartily when recalling "Carnage"'s "rather ridiculous set-up, where they eat cobbler and drink whiskey -- in the middle of the day! It's just so absurd."

UNFAZED BY DEMANDING DIRECTOR

But while Winslet said the eight-week Paris shoot was "a really terrific time for all four of us," it wasn't full-on fun and laughter.

Polanski, after all, has a reputation as one of the film world's more autocratic and meticulous directors.

That didn't faze Winslet, who shot to fame on the strength of performances in small, independent films such as "Heavenly Creatures" and "Sense and Sensibility" before striking box office gold with "Titanic."

Winslet, after all, is a woman who recently braved a raging inferno at Richard Branson's private island villa in the Caribbean to rescue his elderly mother and who took on Britain's notorious tabloids in a 2009 libel case -- and won.

"I've never come across such energy in a man, maybe ever," she said of Polanski. "He has such incredible charisma ... and the naughtiest, cheekiest energy."

As to his working style, she called Polanski "incredibly direct. He is really blunt, really frank, which I love."

"He can be cutthroat," she continued. "But at the same time I was surprised by how collaborative he was," telling the cast to "try it your way," before adding after a pause: "My way will be better, but try it."

"Bless him, he would let us have a go," she laughed.

Winslet allowed that in order to work with such a perfectionist "you have to be, as an actor, very tough. For a younger actor who isn't so experienced, I could imagine how Roman's directing style could be very overwhelming."

The actress said she was surprised by how much she enjoyed the theatrical nature of the film shoot, which was preceded by two full weeks of rehearsal and the cast having to learn the entire script -- the way it's done on stage.

"People think because I'm English I've done so much theater. But I've hardly done any," she said. "It was surprising to me, how much I did enjoy the process of repetition, repetition, repetition."

So did it whet her appetite to return to the stage, which she hasn't visited professionally since age 18?

"I have my children. They are my world and absolutely my priority, and the idea not to be able to put them to bed for three months and have weekends with them for three months ... I'll keep fantasizing about it, but will have to park the idea for now," she said.

Demi Lovato talks fears when going to rehab

Demi Lovato has been bouncing back from her rehabilitation stay, but when she first checked in, she wasn’t so sure that would happen.

Lovato recently opened up to ‘Latina’ magazine about what her worries were when entering rehab last year, states Just Jared. “I thought I was going to lose everything when I checked myself into treatment. I didn’t know if I would have a career at all when I came home,” Lovato commented.

However, that thought made her realize something else that she feels really saved her: “I hadn’t been grateful. In that sense, I can honestly say I’m glad I hit rock bottom when I did. Most people don’t have those moments.”

Lindsay Lohan due in court on theft charges

After numerous reports regarding Lindsay Lohan’s next potential acting gig – she has been linked to a role in the John Gotti film, though most of the reports seem to be coming out of LiLo’s camp, and not from the actual film’s producers – we’re right back to reporting on Lohan’s criminal activities, and all feels right with the world.

Lohan will be in court today, Friday, for a preliminary hearing regarding her potential involvement in the theft of a necklace from a California jewelry store. In typical Lohan fashion, she did her best to postpone the court hearing, citing religious beliefs. (It’s Good Friday, and Lohan claims to be Catholic, though she probably couldn’t tell you that “Thou shalt not steal” is a commandment.)

ABC News says that prosecutors “are expected to question the shop owner who says surveillance video shows the ‘Mean Girls’ actress walking out of the store wearing the designer necklace for which she had not paid.”

Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, meanwhile, will argue that the necklace’s value is less than $900, thereby reducing the charge to a misdemeanor.

As ABC News reports, Lohan “has already been to jail three times in the past three years for DUI, drug possession and probation violations.”

Cameron Diaz talks about working with her ex, Justin Timberlake

It’s not always easy for exes to work together, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake.

The two will be in ‘Bad Teacher’ together and it sounds like things went incredibly smooth, states UsMagazine.com. “Justin and I have always had a good laugh together, and to make a movie where we get to have a laugh together, and there really was no one else who was more perfect for this part,” Diaz said about everything working out.

And apparently there is no need to think anything else might be happening on the set: “[Just] two people who were working together, who just so happened to have gone out with one another at another time in our lives.”

James Cameron Urges Industry to Use Faster Frame Rates

Higher frame rates offer the “potential to improve showmanship,” the director tells attendees at CinemaCon.

LAS VEGAS — Calling the current use of frame rates in digital cinema “inadequate,” James Cameron urged the industry to consider shooting and projecting movies at rates higher than the standard 24 frames-per-second in a demonstration he presented Thursday at Cinemacon.
Cameron contended that that higher frame rates offer the “potential to improve showmanship.”

To prove his point, he showed a comparison of 3D content produced and projected at 24 frames-per-second, which is commonly used today, as well as at 48 and 60 frames-per-second (fps). He also showed clips that demonstrated other elements such as slow motion at these higher frame rates.

As the clips played, Cameron pointed to some distracting strobing that occurred at 24 fps and pointed to the improvements from the higher frame rates. He that the higher frame rates produce an “enhanced sense of detail” and “enhanced clarity” and told the audience he was going to be “agnostic about whether it be 48 or 60." “That should be discussed,” he said. “We need to make the decision as a group.”

He added, “I’m going to try to be as active as possible - until we figure out what the best answer.”

Cameron revealed that he considered shooting Avatar at 48 fps, but decided the time wasn’t right. However, he intends to shoot Avatar 2 and 3 at a higher frame rate - the question is whether that will be at 48 or 60. He is currently writing the script and is at least 18 months away from starting to shoot.

The filmmaker noted that he is not alone in pursuing higher frame rates, saying that George Lucas (with whom he appeared on a CinemaCon panel Wednesday) is “gung-ho,” as is Peter Jackson, who “did testing for The Hobbit.”

While adopting higher frame rates would affect both production and exhibition, Cameron said that digital cinematography cameras already accommodate these higher frame rates. In fact, 60 is the current standard in sports production.

In terms of exhibiting digital movies at the higher rate, Cameron said: “The generation two projectors are capable of doing what I show you with a software upgrade."

Cameron enthused at one point: “We are geeking out now, I love this stuff.”

The demo came together fairly quickly. The idea to do the demonstration at CinemaCon was born at the recent DGA Awards, Cameron said.

The CinemaCon presentation took place in The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Cameron noted that the projection area looked like a “science project.” It included stacked Christie DLP Cinema projectors, with Doremi servers and the RealD 3D system.

Cameron thanked a string of collaborators who made the demonstration possible, including Christie, Texas Instruments, Doremi, Real D, Sony, Blackmagic Design, Modern VideoFilm, Reliance Media Works, the production team including Russell Carpenter and John Buckley, as well as the team at Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment.

The clips, which featured a period dinner and fight sequences, were shot in one day by Russell Carpenter, the Academy Award winning director of photography of Titanic. They were lensed with three types of digital cinematography cameras‹the Arri Alexa, Red Epic and Phantom high speed cameras‹all using the 3D rigs from PACE, which were developed by Cameron and 3D innovator Vince Pace.

“I hope this opens the door to testing that needs to be done,” Cameron said, citing areas such as visual effects. “I’m making the content available to anyone who wants to test it.”

What I love about Hollywood and the Oscars is that there is room for all kinds of movies, the behemoths as well as hole-in-the-wall kind of films.

Though the list for the best picture nomination has been extended to 10, I am listing my favourite candidates in the first half of the list.

One of them is Precious, a dark, often harrowing but in the final reckoning a life-affirming film which lost its steam a few weeks after its strong opening and now it could end its North American run with about $45 million. A solid number for a film that cost about $10 million to make and about $25 million to market.

It could also do well when DVD and Blu-Ray discs are out. But the film was expected, following dazzling reception at the Toronto International Film Festival and elsewhere, and Oprah's endorsement, to gross at least $100 million. It is certainly among my top five.

My list also contains the mesmerizing German film White Ribbon about study of fascism in a seemingly charming and quiet German village.

Pedro Almodovar's suspenseful Spanish film Broken Embraces also is worthy of a nomination. It is a kind of film Billy Wilder and Alfred Hitchock would have made had they collaborated on it.

Invictus, the post-apartheid drama directed by Clint Eastwood, got good reviews. But the $60 million suspense film which is uplifting and funny did a mediocre $38 million business in North America. If the French box office is any vindication, where the film is headed for a $30 million gross, Eastwood's film is headed for a small profit, even without any Oscar nominations.

The utterly crazy and inventive comedy The Hangover should be taken seriously too.

On the other side of the spectrum, is the heart-pounding and suspenseful The Hurt Locker which also has several fabulous performances.

The singer told Ryan Seacrest that she plans on touring soon for her new album, ‘Femme Fatale,’ states RadarOnline.com. “Yes, I’m supposed to be going on tour, early summer U.S,” Spears revealed.

Spears’ last tour was 2009’s ‘Circus.’ No word yet if she will be touring in Europe as well.

Sheen has allegedly reported that Russell Brand is supporting him through this rough time, states RadarOnline.com.
While this may not seem surprising at first, it is because Brand is an open supporter of Alcoholics Anonymous, a group Sheen bashed. Brand even still attends meetings each week.
However, Sheen claims Brand got in touch with him and is there for him, another sign that Sheen is “winning.”

The "Harry Loves Lisa" starlet decided her upper lip was just too big and back in August she had her doctor surgically reduce the size of her pucker.

Ms. Rinna told press, "My lips started to define who I am. That bothered me. It doesn't matter what other people think. I did it for myself."

Now in her six-month healing stage, complete with a swollen face, Lisa added, "It's a work in progress, but I feel fantastic."

Photos were taken of the Victoria's Secret model and New York City art dealer, Helly Nahmad, who ended up explaining the controversial pics to a Brazilian newspaper.

"Gosh," he told. "It was a kiss on the cheek." He claimed that the camera caught them at a deceptive angle.

Nahmad said that he and Gisele are longtime friends and added that her husband Tom Brady even saw the talked-about photos -- and laughed.

'Social Network' Tops Weekend Box Office

This is just the beginning for Sony’s “The Social Network” as the David Fincher film earned a solid $23 million in its opening weekend and will now build upon solid word-of-mouth and Oscar buzz to eventually reach the $100 million mark in domestic revenue. It is rare for a film to earn a four or five times multiple of its opening weekend, but the themes, performances and expected ongoing positive buzz will keep this one in the box office fight for many weeks to come.

Check out this "The Social Network" themed comic strip from Francesco Marciuliano. Francesco writes the internationally-syndicated comic strip “Sally Forth” and the webcomic “Medium Large.” He was the head writer for the PBS series “SeeMore’s Playhouse,” for which one of his episodes won two 2007 Daytime Emmys. He currently writes for the Onion News Network.

The owls showed amazing strength this weekend with a very “Town”-like 33% second weekend drop for “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” earned $10.85 million and thus brings its domestic total to just over $30 million. It certainly pays to be one of the few family films in this marketplace and with the IMAX and 3D presentations to put it over the top; this is a solid fall performer.

Last weekend’s number one film “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” dropped 47% to land in third with $10.1 million and a total domestic gross to date of $35.9 million. Oscar buzz could build for star Michael Douglas who gave his newly re-booted Gordon Gekko a healthy infusion of pathos and introspection.

Number four belongs to Warner Bros.’ “The Town” starring Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner as the film realizes yet another buzz-worthy 36% third weekend drop and $10 million in the money bag. The film has earned over $64 million to date and will continue to draw audiences looking for a taut, intelligent action movie boosted by stellar performances.

Another strong hold for Sony’s “Easy A” keeps it in the top five curriculum in its third week against a freshman-sized 34% drop and an even $7 million for the weekend and $42.4 million for this profit-making teen comedy. Great word-of-mouth continues to bolster the long term prospects for the Emma Stone starring vehicle. Nathaniel Hawthorne would be proud.

Two other wide releases had a tough go this weekend and debuted outside of the Top Five with Paramount Vantage’s “Case 39” starring Bradley Cooper at number seven earning $5.35 million, and Overture Films’ brilliant horror re-make “Let Me In” in eighth place with $5.3 million.

The Fall Movie Season is in full swing and while the overall weekend was down about 5%, the individual movies in the marketplace are holding well and generating solid buzz. Clearly kids need movies too in the fall and this has benefitted “The Owls of Ga’Hoole” and at the same time, the adult drama is making a major comeback with “The American,” “The Town,” “Wall Street 2” and “The Social Network” all performing well and finding favor with a broad audience looking for a quality-filled experience at the movie theatre.

London, Sep 26 (ANI): Sugababes singer Amelle Berrabah was recently taken into custody on suspicion of drink driving after a late-night argument with her beau.

The drama, which started in the early hours of Thursday morning, saw cops called to the couple's London flat twice.

Thereafter, police arrested her behind the wheels of her Mercedes Mclaren Supercar.

Neighbours were woken by screaming and shouting at around in the early hours when they heard Amelle, 26, was banging on the door of the flat she shares with boyfriend Tom Benn, 30.

When one worried neighbour raced to the scene, Tom pleaded with him to call the police claiming he was restraining Amelle.

"It was mayhem. They must have woken the whole apartment block with the noise. It was very distressing because there were all sorts of noises coming out of their apartment. We thought someone had been seriously hurt," News Of The World quoted a neighbour as saying.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: Amelle Berrabah will appear on bail at Highbury on Friday, October 8 charged with driving with excessive alcohol."(ANI)

For his artistic efforts at HMP Highpoint in Suffolk, the 47-year-old millionaire singer earns only a few quid a week.

George - jailed for eight weeks for smashing his car into a shop after smoking cannabis - abandoned a bid for bail last week.

"Just like the other lags, George is working during the day. He's painting the walls inside the prison," News of the World quoted a source as saying.

"It's like the Forth Bridge, it just needs painting over and over. But it keeps the inmates busy and takes their minds off how much time they've got left to serve." (ANI)

Rowling talked about depression that drove her to the brink of suicide in a candid interview with Winfrey to be shown across America next week, reports the Daily Express.

Now worth an estimated 519 million pounds, Rowling gave an emotional account of her struggle as a single mother and an aspiring novelist before her rise to stardom.

Winfrey asked her regrets in life, her critics and her husband Dr Neil Murray, who is described as the "love of her life".

In the candid hour-long interview, Winfrey also discovers why Rowling once turned down an offer from pop star Michael Jackson.
